Oh yes that’s so tempting always, if someone buys product A from you then says if only you offered product X but if product A is your area of expertise then stick at it. I mean how many of your customers would want product X and would it distract you from being really good at product A. It is hard especially when you need to make a living but having one or two people ask for something doesnt always mean that there is a market for it. Keep up the great work

Brilliant & so very true. I certainly can easily fall into the trap as customers often ask for things I do not make and suggest that I do make them! Its very tempting to do this to keep your customers happy. Many thanks for this.

"Meeting up with and speaking to other business owners can really help you see that we all make mistakes in business, and learning from them and moving on is key to your business success."

There seems to be reluctance to do that, and I just don't understand why. Fair enough, I'm no business owner and I can't say I want to be, so perhaps I'm not seeing the practicalities. But there won't be a single business owner that hasn't made a mistake at some point. Perhaps the mistake happened behind closed doors, perhaps it didn't have a huge impact, perhaps it was just a minor inconvenience. But every business owner will have made a mistake at some point. And it isn't "focusing on the negative" to discuss mistakes or to study other businesses that have failed. You can learn from the mistakes of others as well as your own.

Another big mistake is trying to grow too fast. I've worked for a few start-ups that did just that and not many of them survived. From where I'm standing - and correct me if I'm wrong, like I said I'm no business owner - it looks a lot easier to kick-start growth than to rein in growth that's spiralling out of control. That big prestigious contract might bring in a lot of money and a lot of good publicity, but only if you deliver on it. You need to have the manpower in place to deliver on it and if you don't have that, ask whether you're in a financial position to employ more people. If you fail to deliver on that big prestigious contract, all that good publicity you've been imagining will never materialise, and you might end up with a lot of negative publicity. No business wants that, particularly not a start-up. Growth is good, but you need to be the one calling the shots.

Or perhaps you don't want to grow. That's fine, so long as you can survive that way. Many businesses can't, and if you can't, you will have to let go of the small business feel. And that can be hard, not just for you but for your employees too. It's happened here recently, we've all been very aware that we're stepping up to the next level. All of a sudden there are new policies and procedures that we'd never even dreamed of, they installed SAP Business One when we'd always done the accounts in Excel. And I've only been here a few years but the company's doubled in size in that time. (Of course, a water cooler, pool table and Wii turned up at roughly the same time, so that distracted us from some of the more intimidating changes)

Seriously though, your business growing is a good thing, but it may feel a bit bittersweet. Your business is changing, but that doesn't mean that it has to become an unpleasant place to work. That's always within your control.

I think that a major factor in women not succeeding in starting up a business (and other things) is outside pressure. Whether it is due to their role as a wife or a mother meaning that they can't dedicate themselves completely to the early needs of a start-up business or whether it is due to there confidence (and resolve) being undermined by partners, parents or peers. I have seen it happen to several people.

Hi Red Shoe Biz Woman,
I agree with some of your blog to a point, I'm a great advocate of attempting the here and now. But equally if now is all that is ever contemplated then maybe the realities of the future become something to worry about. I have always thought and approached things with balance. In the moment yes and then time with an eye on the future.

I believe that to live happily with now, comes from having some time to nudge and shape towards a future of your creating. Not one that 'happens' to you.

As for bouncing back, Id rather recognise where I could have improved than hold a bias that sees history repeating itself.
What do you think?

Hi I like your post these are a good place to start. interesting I should come across it today as I was just talking to a fellow woman in business about how for many the biggest barrier is a wish not to be seen. I've come across a number of women that this is an issue for - being invisible in some sense is also being safe. Learning to be comfortable with being seen is about not only reclaiming your authentic self but also trusting that it is safe to stand out from the crowd.

Given the examples here in the UK and elsewhere in the world of mothers starting up a business, personally I associate the term MUMpreneur with mothers, who are successful business women who do it all through creativity, good planning and determination.
The conservative view of only being able to turn a business into a success by only focusing on your business and nothing else lies far behind us.
Whether you want to call me a mumpreneur or not I am a mum and business owner and I aim to be successful in both.

Perhaps Tanmen is taking a stereotypical view point to get across her message or indeed it may very be based on some primary research but it seems to my eyes it engineering to get a view point across rather than a true reflection of reality which is often far more complex.

As a learning tool it is probably very valuable inn highlighting communication issues, especially when the stereotype is more accurate reflection of the situation.

Your question is however very pertinent but I suggest it relates to personality as much as it does to gender.

I would add, delegate effectively as a true leader will not be able to do everything by themselves.

A great list, would you mind it if I used it as a guest blog post in the near future.

Kind regards

Great list. Not always easy to do. My top tip, for leaders in someone else's company is: Accept you will have to play the game by boys' rules, after all you are playing their game in their world. Following your own rules will not help you win the game - It also means you have to work much harder to learn the rules, as boys have learned to play by those rules from nursery onwards. I believe this is quite different when you run your own business though, and you can play a large part of the game by your own (female) rules.

Jenny,
I also love working from home although do love to have interaction with others so balance the home office quiet with busy networkign events, conferences and social gatherings.

It works well for me as I also like the flexibility of taking time out of the day for other things. Do you have any tips for toehrs who are not finding it so easy to work from home Jenny.

Great advice Rebecca. I love working from home because I can do everything to my own timetable, I've learnt to be disciplined though. Wonderful how I can choose to take a walk on a sunny afternoon then work in the evening and so on. I don't find it lonely, in fact I prefer it to the distractions of constant noise and chatter in an office environment!

Your right, there is a time and a place for promoting your business. Each of us has to find the right time and the right places. What works for one doesn’t necessarily work for another.

Enjoy your use of twitter

Yes. Totally. The boundaries of professional conduct and being yourself and being personable online conflict for many.

They do for me, which is why I get on with what I'm good at, which is being myself without all the professional conduct, PR and promotion stuff.

There's a place for promotion and for me, that place is not Twitter. I'd hate to 'need' to use Twitter to promote. I think I'd probably end up being very 2 dimensional.

All is good in the land of Twitter.

Roger
Thank you for your comments, the buying power of women is well researched and there is much to be read on the topic. In generalist terms women are looking for a total buying experience, in general they like easy buying options, reviews and feedback from others as well as recommendations from people they trust.

Happy to talk to you some more on this topic drop me a line.

Being your own boss also gives you the opportunity to earn your income from several different sources. Before the recession, a permanent job may have felt like a safe and sensible option. Now, for many, it feels like placing all your financial eggs in one basket - if your job goes all your income goes too. Having said that it's a steep learning curve to move from employed to self employed and the change in mindset is pretty significant too.
